Kodiak is a city on the northeastern tip of Kodiak Island. It is home to the Kodiak brown bear and is a leading commercial fishing port. Some attractions include the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, the Baranov Museum, and the Kodiak Military History Museum. The Kodiak Crab Festival takes place over Memorial Day weekend and includes carnival rides, food and game booths, and group activities. There are also a number of events, such as a kayak race, marathon, and the Pillar Mountain Run.
There are several large chain stores, such as Wal-Mart and Safeway and Kodiak's airport attracts both local and regional airlines, air taxis, and charter helicopters.
